The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international fundamental research centre at the leading edge of neutron science and technology. Based in Grenoble, France, it operates one of the brightest neutron sources in the world. The ILL is funded and managed by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, and has signed scientific collaboration agreements with 12 other countries. The Reactor Division currently has a vacancy in the ‘Reactor Block, Fuel and Sources’ group of its Mechanical Engineering Service for a Mechanical maintenance technician (m/f).

Job description

As a member of the group responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Reactor Division’s lifting and handling equipment, your main duties will be to:

  • operate and maintain the reactor’s handling facilities (fuel loading and unloading operations, replacement of water; fuel handling columns, handling cranes and gantries, hot cell, etc.),
  • organise work sites from their preparatory phase through to completion of the work,
  • draft procedures, technical specifications, reports, etc.,
  • assist on an occasional basis with the operation of the other equipment under the group’s responsibility.

The post involves working with a high degree of autonomy in the medium term.

Requested Profile

Qualifications and experience:

  • NVQ Level 4 or equivalent qualification (e.g. BTEC HND) in mechanical engineering or industrial maintenance with some initial professional experience OR a first-level university degree with or without experience;
  • Over and above specific technical skills, an ability to draft documents (procedures, technical specifications, technical reports) is essential;
  • Practical experience in the maintenance of mechanical equipment in industrial nuclear installations and/or a knowledge of vacuum techniques would be an advantage;
  • You are well-organised with good analytical skills. You are both team-minded and able to show initiative and work independently. You are versatile and also have a hands-on approach to your work.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. A sound command of French is essential. Knowledge of English and/or German would be appreciated.
