A position that is open at the MIT Nuclear Research Reactor. This person will be responsible for the overall safety and management of the reactor. He will also be our interface to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Director of Reactor Operation, Nuclear Reactor Lab (NRL), to serve as the senior operations person at the MIT Research Reactor. The Candidate will be responsible for the safe operation of the 6 MW reactor with its associated experimental facilities; direct reactor planning including standard operating procedures, emergency and abnormal operating procedures, training/requalification programs, quality assurance, and the security plan; manage all engineering and maintenance upgrades for the reactor; and oversee engineering personnel supporting reactor experiments. Additional responsibilities will include overseeing the fuel management program including spent fuel shipments; interfacing with Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors and handling correspondence with that agency; maintaining up-to-date knowledge of federal regulations as they pertain to nuclear reactors, especially NRC: 10 CFR 20/50/55/73 (maintaining reactor safety analysis reports and associated technical specifications); and adhering to all radiation protection measures and exercising sound radiological control judgment while working in areas containing radioactive materials.
The candidate will manage a staff of approximately thirty personnel.
Required: a B.S. degree in engineering or science, five years of experience responsibly managing a nuclear reactor, good writing skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. A senior reactor operator’s license or equivalent authority from a similar facility is required. U.S. Navy nuclear experience and commercial or research nuclear reactor experience is desired.
