The Diffraction group in CEMD has two immediate openings for postdoctoral positions focused on disordered materials studies, aimed at experimentally quantifying the links between surface chemistry, particle morphology, and “internal” crystal structure in functional nanomaterials. One position is aimed at following the stabilization and growth of nanoscale polymorphs from solution. Another position will focus on uncovering the nature of ferroelectric phase transitions in different nanocrystal sizes and shapes.
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. The Diffraction Group in the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) of the NcSD operates single crystal and powder diffraction instruments addressing a range of problems in chemistry and materials research. Areas of research supported by the group include the structure and behavior of electrical energy storage materials and systems, fundamentals of structure under pressure and/or temperature conditions, and the effects of processing conditions on material performance.
Successful candidates will work within a collaborative team to develop and apply new sample environments, data reduction, and structure refinement methodologies, primarily at the high-flux neutron total scattering instrument NOMAD. Projects will additionally employ laboratory characterization and complementary scattering techniques (including small angle scattering, synchrotron x-ray total scattering, etc.). The positions will allow postdoctoral scientists to develop expertise, broaden experience and to interact with a diverse set of leading scientists working at and visiting ORNL’s neutron facilities.
A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or other related science field is required. Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Candidates should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels. The ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team is a critical asset.
Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.
Previous experience in neutron and/or X-ray scattering applied to nanostructure studies is desired. Candidates with total scattering (local structure) expertise and data modeling programs are highly encouraged to apply. Programming proficiency in Python, C++, and/or Fortran is desired.
