With the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source (SNS), and the world’s highest flux reactor-based neutron source (the High Flux Isotope Reactor), ORNL has become the world’s foremost center for neutron science. The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. The role of the Scientific Associate is to establish and maintain robust and reliable operations of neutron scattering instruments at a facility that operates 24/7 during periods of neutron production. Scientific Associates must be cognizant of operational parameters and equipment and provide front line operational support to the scientific programs conducted on those instruments. The Scientific Associate will coordinate with beam line staff to develop and maintain beam line operations by optimizing operations procedures, practices, and user manuals, and support a safety-minded and operations-oriented culture among instrument team members.
The successful candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, with preference given to postgraduate degrees in these fields. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization.
A postgraduate degree in science or engineering is preferred. Experience in providing instrument support at a user facility is desired.
