The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. The Chemical and Engineering Materials Division of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking motivated candidates for a postdoctoral research associate position in neutron imaging and diffraction. With the advent of instruments such as the HFIR CG-1D cold imaging beamline, it has now become possible to obtain high-spatial resolution 2 and 3-dimensional neutron imaging data of a series of advanced materials. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in neutron scattering, advanced manufacturing and modeling. This person will also have the opportunity to collaborate with VULCAN and CG-1D beamlines, when the research interests are aligned.
Candidates with a recent Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, or related fields will be considered. Experience in neutron and/or X-ray imaging and/or diffraction and computer analysis/programming/modeling is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required.
Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
Preference will be given to those candidates with experience with using an x-ray and/or neutron imaging and/or diffraction beamline. Expertise in additive manufacturing is preferred. Experience in software reconstruction, 2D and 3D image visualization and quantitative analysis is desired. Knowledge of strain mapping and data reduction by diffraction is a plus.
Expertise in time-of-flight neutron diffraction and imaging techniques is preferred. Neutron simulations using Monte Carlo based software (McStas and/or MCNP-X) is preferred. Knowledge in Python language is preferred.

Certain exceptions may be considered. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 12 months, renewable up to 2 times upon performance assessment of candidate.
