The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Job description

Purpose

The Chemical and Engineering Materials Division of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking motivated candidates for a postdoctoral research associate position in crystal plasticity based finite element modeling and analysis of neutron diffraction experiments. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in neutron scattering, advanced manufacturing and modeling. This person will also have the opportunity to collaborate with VULCAN and CG-1D beamlines, and will make use of ORNL High Performance Computing (HPC) resources when the research interests are aligned. In addition to world leading facilities for neutron diffraction studies, ORNL is home to the most powerful supercomputer for open science (www.olcf.ornl.gov).

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Work with computational scientists, neutron scattering scientists and other core project team members to develop a state-of-the-art modeling/simulation capability for general users by using the unique HPC and neutron facilities of ORNL.

*Develop computational tools to extract neutron diffraction relevant quantities from mesoscale crystal plasticity based finite element simulations.

  • Extend the computational capability to the interpretation of residual stress measurements of parts made by additive manufacturing (AM).
  • Create user-friendly interface to the new computational capabilities.
  • Assist in performing neutron imaging and diffraction studies at the various world-class instruments at the SNS and HFIR.
  • Publish research results in scientific journals.

Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand and eye protection gear, kneeling, sitting for extended periods of time, extensive work at chemical laboratories, and possible exposure to ionization radiation normally associated with operation of neutron scattering instruments for scientific research.

Requested Profile

Qualifications Required

Candidates with a recent Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, or related fields will be considered. Familiarity with the finite element method (FEM), modeling of elastic and plastic deformation of structural alloys, and micro mechanics models for small and finite strain deformations including crystal plasticity theory is required. Expertise in metallurgy and material deformation behaviors is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

Certain exceptions may be considered. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment of 24 months.

Employment is contingent upon the results of a drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.

Qualifications desired:

Preference will be given to those candidates with experience in engineering diffraction and analyzing neutron and/or X-ray imaging and/or diffraction data. Knowledge in additive manufacturing is preferred. Experience in time-of-flight neutron diffraction and imaging techniques is preferred. Knowledge of C++, Fortran, and other programming languages and experience with developing and running simulations using parallel computing resources is preferred.
