ISIS Facility, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
Harwell Campus,Didcot
UK
ISIS is a world centre for research in the physical and life sciences at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford in the United Kingdom. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments allows the properties of materials to be understood at the atomic scale.
Following recent developments in our instrumentation and scientific capabilities, we are seeking world-class scientists who can make major contributions to our current and future research programmes.
The Molecular Spectroscopy Group provides neutron scattering facilities and expertise across the chemical and physical sciences, including energy research, catalysis, and nanoscience. The group currently supports a world-leading science and instrumentation programme on six high-resolution spectrometers. List of Duties / Work Programme / Responsibilities
A full-time permanent vacancy exists to support and develop our science and instrumentation programme in chemical dynamics and spectroscopy on the TOSCA spectrometer.
This post represents an excellent opportunity to create both collaborative and personal scientific research programmes exploiting the capabilities of neutron scattering in key areas of chemistry and materials research.
As a member of the ISIS Molecular Spectroscopy Group, you will also be expected to develop a sufficient understanding of other instruments in the group, and to support the group’s wider operational programme.
Contacts and Communication
You will interact extensively with visitors both from higher education institutions as well as industry. External representation will also range from presenting their own scientific work at conferences to strategic engagement with stakeholders, and delineating future directions in science and facility development.
Internally, you will be expected to contribute to the wider activities of the Molecular Spectroscopy Group and actively represent the group in its interactions with other ISIS and STFC science and technology groups.
Any other Relevant Information
This is a permanent post within the ISIS Molecular Spectroscopy Group.
Some out-of-hours work during evenings and weekends will be required to support our research programme.
You will be required to be a classified radiation worker.
You will be a PhD in the physical sciences (chemistry, physics or related discipline) as well as experience in condensed-phase dynamics and spectroscopy and computational materials modelling. Further post-doctoral experience and knowledge of neutron spectroscopy are highly desirable. Good interpersonal and presentation skills are required.
