Description of Institution

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international centre for scientific research situated in Grenoble, France. It is Europe’s leading neutron science facility. We receive over 2000 visiting scientists per year to carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields.

Job description

Duties:
The Diffraction group operates a large suite of powder and single crystal diffractometers to carry out collaborative research programs in various areas of chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, and protein structure. The D19 instrument specializes in small molecule crystallography, with typical unit-cells of up to 50 × 50 × 50 Å3. We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with previous experience in chemical crystallography to work on the D19 diffractometer. Working within the DIF group, while carrying out your own active research program, you will be in charge of:

  • developing a research program in chemical crystallography in collaboration with the user community
  • providing support to users for scientific experiments on the D19 diffractometer
  • participating in the development and maintenance of the D19 diffractometer
  • promoting the ILL single crystal program in small molecule crystallography.

Notes:
Fixed-term contract of 3 years.
Further information can be obtained by contacting the Head of the Diffraction Group:
Dr Laurent Chapon tel.: +33(0)4.76.20.70.29, e-mail: or via http://www.ill.fr/dif. (please do not send your application to this address).
Application must be submitted in English.

Benefits:
Generous company benefits (expatriation allowance), relocation assistance and language courses may be offered for you and your spouse (for more information, please consult our employment conditions).

Requested Profile

Qualifications and experience:
You hold a PhD in chemistry, physics, or a related discipline.
You have an experience in neutron and/or X-ray small-molecule crystallography acquired during your PhD or post-doctoral studies.
Previous experience as instrument scientist is desirable.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French. Knowledge of German would be an advantage. Language courses will be paid for by the ILL.
