The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. BSMD (Biological and Soft Matter Division) is seeking an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral position with a
computer/computational science background to develop cutting edge scalable software for advanced neutron sciences data analysis applications. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists at the CSED (Computational Sciences and Engineering Division of the CCSD) on advanced parallel data structure concepts and their applications to scalable solutions of pressing data analysis needs in the NScD. The successful candidate will be part of a team tasked with delivering a high-impact computational framework for the worldwide users of the SNS and HFIR instruments.
Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physical Science, Materials Science and Engineering or a related area with a strong computational background is required. Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application or be on track to finish and defend their PhD within the next 6 months. Applicants must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Applicants must have a proven track record of published research in the design and development of parallel algorithms and methods. Candidates must be proficient with parallel computing standards such as Message Passing Interface (MPI) and OpenMP in programming languages such as C/C++/Fortran.
Experience in GPU programming using CUDA/OpenCL would be a plus.
