A position for a Ph.D. student is available on a project that will primarily study oxidative reactions of lipids, macromolecules and peptides in thin films and membranes. Compositional and structural changes in these materials are hugely important in biomedicine, health and environmental areas. Unique detailed information can be obtained using deuterium labelling and neutron scattering from surface layers and from assemblies in solution.

The project will be conducted at the Ångström Laboratory and will involve both the Departments of Chemistry and Physics and Astronomy. There is wide expertise in structural studies of soft matter and in chemistry of surface active materials. The local supervisors are Adrian Rennie, Tim Bowden and Maja Hellsing. Strong collaboration is planned with the group Dr Katherine Thompson at the Department of Biological Sciences, Birkbeck, University of London as well as the Deuteration Laboratory of the STFC at RAL, UK.
This PhD student position is part of SwedNess (http://www.swedness.se/), the Swedish national graduate school for neutron scattering where Uppsala University is one of the responsible academic institutions. The school is fully funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) and aims to educate a new generation of highly skilled neutron experts. Each PhD student is fully funded from the start, including salary and a sufficient running budget. This provides excellent possibilities to travel for experiments and to visit international facilities, institutions and conferences.

A suitable candidate could be enrolled in either Chemistry or Physics depending on their background and prior qualifications. A good degree in chemistry, physics or a related discipline is needed. Skills in both laboratory experiments and computer analysis of data are desirable. Capability to work independently as well as with others in a team is needed. An ability to teach in Swedish is an additional merit as the opportunity for a limited amount of teaching in either chemistry or physics is available.
Appointment to employment as a graduate student requires admission to PhD studies, for which the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the doctoral studies will be decisive. The PhD position is for four years that is extendable to a maximum of five years if there are extra departmental duties that can amount, at most, to 20% and are typically teaching.
