The Faculty of Medicine is a part of Lund University, and is responsible for education and research within medicine and healthcare. Nucleic acids constitute one of the main components of viruses by molecular weight, and the viral genome is often strongly confined into a small volume of the capsid. This is true for most prokaryotic viruses such as double-stranded (ds) DNA/RNA phages, dsDNA archaeal viruses as well as many eukaryotic viruses (e.g. herpesviruses and reoviruses). The length of ds-genome in those viruses is several hundred times longer than the diameter of the capsid. We recently found that this internal DNA stress leads to 30 atmospheres capsid pressure in human Herpesviruses. This genome pressure is responsible for DNA ejection into a cell nucleus during infection. The aim of this project is to explain how the physically stressed state of the confined viral DNA directly affects the infectious cycle by analyzing structure of virally encapsidated genome. The main experimental approach will be Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS).
Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
PhD in physics/physical chemistry or biochemistry or cell biology is preferable but is not limited to these fields of study.
Research experience in neutron scattering (SANS) and/or X-ray scattering (SAXS) is required. Preferable experience in modeling and analysis of neutron scattering data and/or experience with cell and virus production.
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.
