Introduction

The Nuclear Physics Institute of The Czech Academy of Sciences (NPI) in Rez, Czech Republic, invites for applications to fill four postdoctoral positions. All four positions are focused on the development and usage of novel neutron imaging methods. The positions are for two years. The starting date should be as soon as possible beginning September 1st, 2017 and is negotiable.
The positions are announced under the project European Spallation Source – participation of the Czech Republic – OP, supported from the Operational Programme Research, Development and Education (MEYS). Within this project a collaboration with the European Spallation Source (ESS, Sweden), Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI, Switzerland) is planned for.

Description of Institution

The Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (http://www.ujf.cas.cz/) is a public research institution with the primary goal to conduct research in multidisciplinary scientific disciplines. In addition, NPI contributes to the applications of research results, training of students, and provides access to large scale research infrastructures.

Job description

The opened positions are dedicated to the part of the project that focusses on developing and applying new diffraction based imaging methodologies for 3D reconstruction of material microstructure and its evolution, entitled “Research Programme B:Development of novel TOF 3D neutron diffraction/imaging methods for engineering material research” These new methodologies are expected to significantly broaden the scope of future work at the BEER instrument at ESS and enable the user community to fully achieve a better understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of modern industrial materials. The subject of the scheduled work is very versatile, including: virtual experiments (simulations), preparing and conducting experiments at beamlines at various neutron facilities, data analysis and interpretation as well as the development of a comprehensive new software platform for that purpose.

Requested Profile

Requirements

  • PhD. degree in Materials science, Engineering Science, Physics or Chemistry
  • A solid background in mathematics.
  • Experience with diffraction and/or imaging with X-rays and/or neutrons
  • Good material science background
  • Strong computational background with experience in programming in python/C++/C programming languages.
  • Prior knowledge in crystallography.
  • Ability to work independently and to plan and carry out complicated tasks,
  • Ability to collaborate within a dynamic international group.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
