Ph.D. position in neutron particle physics (75%) (duration 3 years) is open for applications.

Job description

The successful candidate is expected to become a member of the NoMoS group working on measurements of correlation coefficients in neutron beta decay (for more details see PoS(EPS-HEP2015) 592), and of the Vienna Doctoral Program “Particles and Interactions” (www.dkpi.at).

The NoMoS project is currently in the design phase. The candidate will be expected to participate in design and implementation of the NoMoS spectrometer, in terms of either spectroscopy or detection of the charged neutron decay products, and to take charge of preparation, execution, and analysis of the first measurement campaign of NoMoS with neutrons.

The position will be available at the earliest from July 1, 2018 for a duration of 36 months.

The contract will have a duration of three years. The annual gross salary will be 29.573,60 EUR in accordance with the salary scale of the Austrian Science Fund.

Requested Profile

Applications are invited from candidates with a Master (or equivalent) degree in a relevant field (e.g., low energy precision or neutron physics). Knowledge of either low energy beam preparation, manipulation, and spectroscopy or of low energy detectors, data acquisition, and characterization techniques are required.

Any experience working with vacuum systems, calibration sources, particle tracking, C++, GEANT4, ROOT, or LabVIEW would be advantageous. The candidate will be expected to take part in beamtime campaigns abroad.

Applicants should have good communication skills and very good English language skills. Any experience of either German or French would be an advantage.
