The Science Division of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) currently has a vacancy:

RESEARCH SCIENTIST (Reflectivity) – m/f

Polarised Neutron reflectivity (PNR) is a powerful technique for determining the structure of layered magnetic materials from the nanometer to the micron scale. With the use of a magnetic reference layer the technique also has applications in all areas of research using neutron reflectometry. The ILL has recently invested in the instrument D17, which now being commissioned for both time of flight and monochromatic polarised neutron options along with analysis for specular and off-specular signals.

Description of Institution

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe’s leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. The Institute welcomes 1700 visiting scientists per year to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded primarily by its three founder members: France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements with 11 other European countries.

Job description

Working within the “Large Scale Structures (LSS)” group, you will be responsible for the instrument D17, in charge of running data collection and analysis software and local contact for scientific experiments on the reflectometers. You will also be encouraged to develop strong collaborations for your own scientific work.

Generous company benefits (expatriation allowance), relocation assistance and language courses may be offered (for more information, please consult our employment conditions )

Fixed-term contract: 5 years.

Requested Profile

Qualifications and experience:
You hold a Ph.D. in physical or material sciences. You have experience in neutron or X-ray reflectometry and a research interest in magnetic structures relevant to polarised neutron reflectometry. The post represents an excellent opportunity for a postdoctoral scientist to develop expertise, broaden their experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world. Applications from more experienced scientists who are able to obtain a secondment period from their home institute will also be considered.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
