Introduction

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe’s leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. The Institute welcomes more than 2000 visiting scientists per year to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded primarily by its three founder members: France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements with 12 other countries. The Science Division currently has a vacancy:

SCIENTIST for chemical or macromolecular crystallography (m/f)

Description of Institution

The ILL diffraction group operates a large suite of powder and single crystal diffractometers to carry out collaborative research programmes in various areas of chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, and protein structure. We’re seeking a scientist working on the D19 instrument which is specialised in small molecule crystallography (with typical unit cells up to 50 × 50 × 50 Å3). It is also well suited to the study of fibrous polymers/biopolymers and to crystallographic studies of smaller proteins.

Job description

Duties:
You will be in charge of :

  • Developing a research programme in chemical or macromolecular crystallography, in collaboration with the user community
  • Providing support to users for scientific experiments on the D19 diffractometer
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of the D19 diffractometer
  • Promoting the ILL single crystal diffraction programme in biological and chemical crystallography

Notes:
This post is a fixed-term contract: 5 years
Further information can be obtained by contacting the Head of the Diffraction Group: Dr L. Chapon tel.: +33(0)4.76.20.70.29, e-mail: (please do not send your application to this address).

Benefits:
Generous company benefits (expatriation allowance), relocation assistance and language courses may be offered (for more information, please consult our employment conditions).

Requested Profile

Qualifications and experience:
You have:

  • A PhD in chemistry, physics, biophysics, or a related discipline
  • Gained experience in neutron and/or x-ray chemical/macromolecular crystallography or biophysics during a PhD or post-doctoral position
  • Experience in approaches for single crystal growth of small molecules or biological systems would be an asset.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
