The Geochemistry and Interfacial Sciences (GIS) Group, Chemical Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is seeking to fill a post-doctoral position as soon as practicable.
The position relates to research lead by Drs. Lawrence M. Anovitz (firstname.lastname@example.org ) and Gernot Rother (email@example.com at ornl.gov ). The successful candidate will be involved in one or more projects whose subjects range from analysis of the effects of geochemical and geological processes on multiscale porosity to the properties of confined fluids and mineral-water interfaces.
The GIS Group functions as a team, with strong emphasis on the integration of experiments with computational models to probe atomic- to meso- to pore-scale fluid and fluid-solid interfacial properties, including X-ray and neutron scattering, various spectroscopies and microscopies, and multiscale molecular modeling. ORNL researchers also have extensive access to the world’s most intense reactor-based and spallation neutron sources and world-class high performance computing platforms. ORNL’s Center for Nanophase Materials Science offers unprecedented access to advanced electron and scanning probe microscopies and nanomaterials synthesis and characterization facilities.
The ideal candidate will have significant experience in application of neutron sciences to hard-materials systems, be geochemically-oriented, and have experience and understanding of laboratory experimental systems, high-pressure/temperature research, and potentially nanomaterial synthesis.
Candidates must have received or completed the requirements for a Ph.D. in Geochemistry, Neutron Sciences, Chemistry, Materials Science or a closely related field within the last five years. The position requires expertise in any of the following: Neutron, X-ray, or light scattering (particularly (U)SANS, SAXS, INS, QENS, SALS, neutron diffraction and total scattering. The ideal candidates will be willing to enthusiastically learn new techniques and apply them to problems of geochemical significance. A priority will be given to those with experience in experimental fluid-solid interaction work, especially in high pressure/temperature systems. The candidate should be a self-starter, able to work independently and be willing to participate creatively in a collaborative team effort. Presentations at international meetings and timely publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals are expected.
