Introduction

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct research on Spectroscopic Investigations of Quasiparticle Couplings in Novel Energy Materials. The focus of this research project is to investigate fundamental excitations in condensed-matter systems for novel energy applications. The position is in the Scattering and Thermophysics Group, Novel Materials and Mechanisms in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD) of the Physical Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
The project will investigate quasiparticle couplings, including electron-phonon, phonon-phonon, and magnon-phonon interactions in novel materials for energy applications, including thermoelectrics, spin-caloritronics, and other related systems. The research program uses an array of experimental and computational techniques, including neutron/x-ray scattering, first-principles computer simulations, ultrafast laser spectroscopy, transport measurements, magnetic/thermal characterization, and synthesis. The incumbent will support science programs funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences.

Job description

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Participate in all aspects of modeling and analysis of advanced nuclear reactor core structures and constituents including project planning, leading development, and data analysis
  • Compile and input experimental data and materials behavior models into an integrated and flexible fuel performance modeling platform
  • Responsible for developing computational models from basic equations and experimental data input
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
  • Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

The initial appointment is a temporary full-time assignment not to exceed 24 months.

Work Directions and Interfaces

Position reports to the Group Leader Scattering and Thermophysics Group in MSTD at ORNL and will be mentored by Dr.Oliver Delaire. Interfaces with research staff across different divisions and directorates, administrative staff, managers, and visitors to ORNL. This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

Requested Profile

Qualifications Required

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science and Engineering or closely related field, must have completed all degree requirements before starting their appointment, and be within five years of receiving Doctorate
  • Demonstrated experience with neutron/x-ray scattering and/or optical spectroscopy
  • Ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Motivated and safety conscious and possess excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
  • Strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Capable of innovative research with minimal supervision and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues
  • Work with staff and contribute to the production of research proposals
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED

  • Strong background in solid-state and condensed matter physics, including elementary excitations, electronic structure, single-crystal characterization, thermodynamics and transport properties
  • Experience with materials modeling, especially molecular-dynamics or first-principles methods
