The Reactor Division at the Institut Laue-Langevin currently has a vacancy for an Electro Mechanical Technician.

Description of Institution

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, heart of the French Alps, is Europe’s leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons and is founded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world. The Reactor Division, whose role is to produce the neutrons needed to supply the ILL’s scientific instruments, is responsible for operating all the technical installations associated with the reactor.

Job description

As a member of the Operations Group, which has round-the-clock responsibility for reactor operations, you will join one of the group’s six shift teams (each comprising a shift leader and four operations technicians) as Shift electromechanical technician, after undergoing statutory training to obtain the necessary certification.

Your main duties will be to:

  • operate the reactor installations,
  • monitor, repair and make the reactor installations secure,
  • prepare and conduct periodic tests and reactor start-up tests,
  • draft operating procedures and instructions,
  • design and implement modifications to improve operating conditions.

Requested Profile

Qualifications and experience:

You have an NVQ Level 4 or equivalent qualification (e.g. BTEC HND) in a related area (e.g. electromechanical engineering or industrial automation) applicable in an industrial/nuclear context, as well as at least two or three years’ practical experience in an industrial setting.

You have a methodical and meticulous approach to your duties and possess good writing skills. You are able to work independently or as part of a team, have a strong service-oriented attitude and are able to take initiative while complying with regulatory requirements.

Language skills:

As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
