Introduction

The Operations Engineer functions within the Central Utilities team to monitor and manage operating systems. The Operations Engineer shall provide proficient and reliable operations support consistent with the approved procedures. Will apply fundamental engineering knowledge to understand and troubleshoot system performance. Will participate in troubleshooting, startup, and commissioning of existing or new systems and components.

Description of Institution

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Job description

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Independently monitor operating systems and give direction to qualified system operators to alter parameters to establish the intended operational condition and achieve SNS production goals.
  • Acts alone to interpret and respond to anomalous operational conditions that require immediate action.
  • Authorizes system operators to start/stop equipment, change operating set points, open/close valves, and provide overall operating direction to achieve the intended operational condition.
  • Report observed operational issues to Senior Operator, other qualified operators and the Team Leader.
  • Make eLog entries to document changes in system or component status.
  • Provide engineering support for the Central Utilities Building (CUB) systems and equipment.
  • Assist in the configuration management of the CUB systems drawings and documents.
  • Provide input and assist in maintaining procedures for the operation and maintenance of the CUB systems.
  • Conduct walk-downs to ensure the integrity of systems and facilities to maintain quality, performance, and reliability.
  • Participate in operational coordination to facilitate design change implementation and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure group and individual compliance with environmental, safety, and health and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of positive values and ethics in the work environment.

Work Directions and Interfaces

  • Reports to Central Utilities Team Leader.
  • Interfaces with operators, technicians, engineers, and managers.
  • Provides engineering support to technicians, engineers, and subcontractor personnel within guidelines established by SNS Research Accelerator Division, SNS, and ORNL policies.

Measures of Effectiveness

  • Maintains working relationships with various teams within SNS, ORNL, and the accelerator community.
  • Communicates the needs of the Research Accelerator Division to SNS RAD and site technical team.
  • Ensure CUB operations are conducted in accordance with the SNS program objectives.
  • Maintains a safe environment at all times. Considers safety in all designs, work plans, and personal actions.
Requested Profile

Qualifications Required

A bachelor’s degree in engineering, plus five to seven years of experience in industrial systems including pumps, valves, piping, control systems, and related components.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor’s degree in engineering, plus five to seven years of experience in industrial systems. Experience in distributed control systems (DCS), computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) software, water chemistry concepts, and bargaining unit workforce are desirable. Excellent communications skills, written and verbal, leading to an effective team environment with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization.
