The role of the Sample Environment Team Leader is to schedule and manage day-to-day operations for a team of technicians in support of scientific user operations. The sample environment team is responsible for deploying and supporting a pool of specialized equipment including high-field magnets, helium dilution refrigerators, furnaces, mechanical load frames, pressure cells, cryostats and closed cycle refrigerators. The Team Leader leads from the front while training / mentoring technicians and is comfortable working in a collaborative multidisciplinary research environment with scientists and engineers.
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists.
