SNS Instrument Systems Software Specialists

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science has funded the design and
construction of the SNS, which will provide the most powerful
next-generation short-pulse spallation neutron source in the world for
neutron scattering and related research in broad areas of the physical,
chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences. The SNS is a
partnership among six DOE national laboratories (Argonne, Brookhaven,
Jefferson, Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge), and is scheduled
for completion in 2006.

This assignment, for 2 to 4 years during the instrument design phase, is at
the Argonne National Laboratory followed by a transfer to the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory for instrument installation and operation. Basic
responsibilities include design/development of software for the data
acquisition systems for the SNS neutron scattering instruments. May also
design/develop SNS neutron scattering data analysis software. This software
will include capabilities for data acquisition, real-time visualization and
manipulation, data archiving, data analysis tools, and a web-based user
interface.

Specific duties:
·	Works with the instrument scientists to define necessary software
capabilities.
·	Participates in discussions leading to decisions about the structure
and content of the SNS data acquisition system software.
·	Develops and tests portions of the data acquisition system software.
·	Participates on the continued development of improved software
capabilities after the initial system is functional.
·	Maintains communications with SNS instrument scientists and
instrumentation staff to ensure that their requirements are being
incorporated into the software being developed and that the software is
suitable for its end users. Interfaces with SNS information technology
staff.
·	Complies with the Environmental, Safety, and Health and Quality
Program requirements including ISMS.
·	Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation
of values and ethics.

Successful candidate will have a BS in physics, computer science, or
electrical engineering and at least 5 years of experience in successfully
developing software, or equivalent combination of education and applicable
experience required. Programming skill in C++ or Java required. Experience
in the development of graphical user interfaces desirable. Must be able to
work effectively in a team environment.

Qualified candidates should submit a resume with a list of three or more
references to: Selection Committee, Attn: P. H. Miller, SNS Project, Dept.
S-9142, 701 Scarboro Road, Mail Stop 6478, Oak Ridge, TN 37830 or email to
tho at sns.gov. Please reference the job title when applying. Applications
will be accepted until the positions are filled.
