Bruce Brown, the IPNS Division Director, has announced plans to retire as
soon as a replacement can be found.  Interested candidates are invited to
apply, and suggestions are welcome.  Bruce asked that I send the attached

Director, Intense Pulsed Neutron Source
Argonne National Laboratory

Applications/Nominations are invited for the position of Director of the
Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) Division, Argonne National Laboratory.
Argonne is one of the preeminent multidisciplinary research facilities in
the country and is operated by the University of Chicago for the Department
of Energy.  IPNS operates a national user facility for the neutron
scattering community.  Also, IPNS is playing a critical role in instrument
design and construction for the Spallation Neutron Source.  For a

The Director will have responsibility for the overall quality of research
programs of the entire division through activities in long-range planning,
preparation of initiatives, establishment of policy and priorities, and
interaction with funding agencies and with the users in the academic and
industrial research communities.  In addition, the Director will encourage
the development of an excellent scientific staff through promotions and new
hires, maintain environmental safety and health standards and promote
interdivisional and multidisciplinary research when opportunities arise.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D., an internationally recognized
research stature, 10+ years of relevant experience in physics/chemistry or
closely allied fields, and experience in managing a research organization.
