CALL FOR PROPOSALS

You are invited to apply for time on the neutron beam instruments at the
NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR).

The deadline for new proposals is September 18, 2001
The September 18 deadline also applies to Program Proposals
Continuation proposals will be accepted until October 16, 2001
The latter must be accompanied by an experimental report

Approved proposals will be allocated instrument time in the period from
approximately January 1, 2002 through July 2002

Please see our Web pages ( http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/ ) for details.

New Proposal Categories

Two proposal types that were not included in the most recent Calls are offered:

1. Program Proposals
· for research programs to be conducted over a 2-year period
· will be held to a higher standard than regular proposals
· approval means a certain number of instrument days on one or at
most two instruments
· regular proposal deadline applies

2. Quick Access Proposals

· for experiments that require expedited access to beam time
· will be held to a higher standard than regular proposals
· review by Program Advisory Committee (PAC)
· PAC must decide that the proposal has superior merit, and that
expedited access is crucial
· proposal deadlines do not apply

                                 ****
Instruments being offered in the current call for proposals are:

     Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) - 30 m (NG3)
     Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) - 30 m (NG7)
Ultra-Small Angle Neutron Scattering (USANS) instrument
     Reflectometer - horizontal geometry
     Reflectometer - vertical geometry
Cold Neutron Triple-Axis with Polarized Beam Option (SPINS)
     Backscattering Spectrometer
     Disk-Chopper Spectrometer
     Neutron Spin-Echo Spectrometer
     Filter-Analyzer Spectrometer (FANS)

Proposals for the following instruments may be submitted at any time:

     High resolution powder diffractometer
     Cold Neutron Depth Profiling Station
     Prompt-Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis Station

If accepted, proposals for the latter three instruments usually receive
instrument time in the subsequent reactor cycle
(i.e., in 1-3 months).

     FAX (301)921-9847

If you wish to be placed on the NCNR electronic mail list, please contact
linda.clutter at nist.gov.

Please submit your proposals by using our Web page proposal form, which
permits quick and efficient processing of your submission. Other formats
(e.g., Word and WordPerfect forms) are also acceptable, and may be e-mailed
to wkamitakahara at nist.gov, or sent by regular mail to the address above.

We would appreciate being informed of any papers published or in press
since October 1, 2000, that have resulted from NCNR instrument time or from
collaboration with NCNR staff. Please send citation references to
melissa.st.clair at nist.gov

Additional information:

Monetary assistance is available through an outreach program of the
University of Maryland, for new NCNR users from U.S. universities (up to
$100/day of allocated instrument time, to a maximum of $500). Preference is
given to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. See
details at http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/outreach.html

Travel support is also available for graduate students not yet committed to
specific thesis projects. Such students may be supported on a visit to the
NCNR to observe or participate in an experiment, accompanying a university
group with a scheduled experiment. See details at
http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/outreach.html

Applicants should list publications resulting from use of previously
allocated instrument time. There is a stringent new length restriction of
800 words on the description of research section.
