The Excitations group operates three chopper spectrometers: HET, MARI and
MAPS; the indirect geometry, coherent excitations spectrometer PRISMA and
the ROTAX diffractometer. The successful candidate will support the user and
instrument development programme on MARI as described below. The successful
candidate will also be expected to actively pursue a scientific research
Supporting the ISIS user programme
The specific tasks will be:
* liasing with the user community, providing scientific and technical
support for the experimental programme on the spectrometers;
* developing scientific collaborations with current and potential
users, thereby expanding the scientific programme;
* providing day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of the spectrometers.
The scientist will:
* play a major role in developing the instrument and neutron
scattering techniques used on the spectrometers;
* maintain and develop software for instrument control and data
* contribute to the design and development of new instrumentation.
* The successful candidate will be expected to pursue a programme of
scientific research that includes the use of HET, MARI, MAPS and PRISMA and
other ISIS instruments and to seek funding to support this research.
Qualification and experience
Applicants will be expected to have a PhD in the physical sciences (physics,
chemistry, materials or earth sciences), and experience of postdoctoral
research and/or inelastic neutron scattering is highly desirable. A flexible
approach to working hours will be required.
Salary will be between either £26,190 and £36,010 or £20,630 and £28,370.
Salary on appointment is awarded according to relevant experience. An index
