HAHN-MEITNER-INSTITUT BERLIN
Department Methods and Instruments
2 Postdoctoral Positions

NO. SF2005/9

The Berlin Neutron Scattering Center BENSC at the Hahn-Meitner-
Institut Berlin invites applications for two postdoctoral positions.
The Hahn-Meitner-Institut is a German National Laboratory and a
member
of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of Research Centres (HGF)
and
has about 600 employees. It hosts the Berlin Neutron Scattering
Center
(BENSC) (http://www.hmi.de/bensc/), a user facility open to guest
scientists from all over the world. To probe the structure and
dynamics of condensed matter, BENSC provides the national and
international research community access to state-of-the- art neutron
scattering equipment and expertise.

These positions are open to post-doctoral candidates who hold a Ph.D.
degree in physics, chemistry, biophysics, material science,
engineering or similar with a strong background in experimental
research. Experience in neutron or X-ray scattering, NMR, magnetism,
polarized neutrons and computer simulation will be considered
particularly appreciated.

The successful candidates will participate in the research and
development work associated with state-of-the-art neutron scattering
instruments at BENSC: either at the cold neutron triple-axis
spectrometer with neutron spin echo option FLEX (V2) or at the time-
of-flight spectrometer NEAT (V3) (see http://www.hmi.de/bensc/). They
will collaborate with renowned guest scientists from all over the
world doing research at these instruments in a broad variety of
subjects in the framework of BENSC user program. They will
participate
in the innovative development program to further enhance these
instruments, both the hardware and the use of advanced control,
virtual experiment simulation and data evaluation software tools.
They
will also conduct their own research program in the field of
condensed
matter research primarily using neutron scattering techniques, in
particular in the study of dynamic processes, elementary excitations,
phase transitions and relaxation phenomena in crystalline, soft,
nano-sctructured and/or biological matter. At BENSC 30% of the
instrument beam time is reserved for in-house research.

The appointment is tenable for 3 years with a salary ranging from
40.000 to 50000 EUR (gross income per annum) depending on age, family
status and qualification.

Applicants should send a letter of application, a detailed CV, a list
of publications and copies of degrees to Hahn-Meitner-Institut
Berlin,
Abt. Personal und Soziales, Glienicker Str. 100, D-14109 Berlin,
Germany, quoting reference NO. SF2005/9 (email:
personalabteilung at hmi.de). The deadline for the application is 21
July 2005.
