[Neutron] POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP - MAGNETISM REFLECTOMETER AT SNS

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
invites applications for a Neutron Scattering Post Doctoral Research
Fellow.  SNS will be the most powerful short-pulse spallation neutron
source in the world.  This unique facility will provide opportunities
for up to 2000 researchers each year from universities, national labs,
and industry for basic and applied research and technology development
in the fields of materials science, magnetic materials, polymers and
complex fluids, chemistry, and biology.  Funded by the U.S. Department
of Energy's Office of Science, SNS will begin operations in June 2006.

 

The incumbent will be a temporary SNS employee.  The term is for 2
years, renewable depending on funding and mutual agreement.  The
successful candidate will support the development, operation, and
commissioning of the Magnetism Reflectometer currently being installed
at the SNS.

 

Major duties and responsibilities are listed below.

 

*         Conducts research in the field of magnetic thin films using
neutron/X-ray and other structural and magnetic characterization
methods.

*         Initiates scientific collaborations and maintains a scientific
program using neutron reflectivity and other methods at SNS and other
facilities.

*         Develops links with the user community and conducts research
in science areas that make use of neutron reflectometry.

*         Supports the development, commissioning, and operation of the
Magnetism Reflectometer currently being installed at the Spallation
Neutron Source

*         Adapts existing reflectivity data analysis code and/or
prepares new code for use at the SNS.

*         Shares duties with other members of the instrument team as a
local instrument contact in support of the SNS user program.

*         Works with other SNS staff including the instrument support
teams to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the Magnetism
Reflectometer.

*         Ensures applicable compliance with environment, safety,
health, and quality program requirements.

 

 

The successful candidate must have: a Ph.D. in a materials science
related discipline, preferably involving neutron scattering or a related
experimental technique; experience in magnetic thin film research;
strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a
team environment on technically challenging problems. Previous
involvement in scattering instrument development is an asset. Expertise
in reflectivity measurements is desired, but excellent candidates from
any discipline are encouraged to apply.
