Software Engineer/Project Leader

The National Institute of Standards and Technology's Center for 
Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking candidates for a position as a 
lead software engineer in its Research Facility Operations 
Group.  This group develops and maintains computer-controlled 
hardware and software associated with all of the neutron scattering 
diffractometers and spectrometers at the NCNR.   More information 
about the NCNR can be found at the web site http://www.ncnr.nist.gov.

The NCNR is in the process of a facility-wide upgrade of the data 
acquisition systems used on its neutron scattering instruments.  An 
individual with experience in real-time instrument control software 
development, and in software project management, is needed to lead 
this effort.  Major duties include managing requirements gathering, 
specifying functional and performance requirements, developing work 
breakdown schedules, and overseeing the development, testing, 
deployment, documentation and maintenance of instrument control 
software. This software is required to provide robust, responsive, 
real-time control of instrument hardware, (e.g. servo and stepping 
motors, encoders, rotary and translation stages, multiple neutron 
counters, process controllers, etc.), and to provide an intuitive, 
easy-to-use graphical interface for displaying, managing and 
processing neutron scattering data.   Additional duties will include 
developing training materials and courses to enable users and 
instrument scientists to customize the software for instrument 
specific purposes.

To qualify, candidates must have a bachelor's degree in computer 
science or in a physical science or engineering.  Candidates must 
have at least two years experience in developing software for 
real-time instrument control.  Desirable qualifications include 
experience in programming in compiled and interpreted languages, 
object-oriented programming techniques, network programming, and 
system administration. Knowledge and experience in the function, 
operation and computer-control of neutron or x ray scattering 
instrumentation are also highly desirable.  Good written and verbal 
communication skills are essential.  Salary depends on qualifications 
and experience.
