[Neutron] Postdoc position at HMI, Berlin

The Hahn-Meitner-Institut invites applications for the position of a 
postdoctoral research scientist who will work in the area of dynamics 
of glassy phenomena and confined systems - neutron scattering and 
simulation. (Joint position between Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, 
Germany and TU-Delft, The Netherlands.)

The Hahn-Meitner-Institute is a German National Laboratory and a 
member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research 
Centres. It hosts the Berlin Neutron Scattering Centre (BENSC) 
(http://www.hmi.de/bensc/), a user facility open to scientists from  
all over the world. To probe the structure and dynamics of solids and 
liquids, BENSC provides scientists with state-of-the-art neutron 
scattering research opportunities.

Combined neutron scattering and numerical model calculation studies 
of nanoscale dynamic processes in condensed matter

Powerful numerical modelling techniques now allow us more and more to 
computationally explore collective processes not only in crystalline 
but also in soft and non-crystalline matter. Inelastic neutron 
scattering is a unique experimental tool to study such processes 
directly in space and time on the relevant nanoscopic scale. The 
candidate will use neutron scattering and possibly X-ray scattering 
experiments to refine, develop and benchmark computer models to 
understand dynamic processes, which determine the functional 
properties in non-crystalline and crystalline matter on the molecular 
level, in particular in clathrates and proteins, polymers and/or 
highly viscosity liquids. In a first approach it is planned to bring 
together existing inelastic neutron scattering studies of glassy 
materials and confined systems by modern numerical simulation 
methods. This work will be carried out in collaboration with TU-
Delft. In the longer run the successful candidate will be expected to 
apply numerical methods for the understanding of experimental results 
and to participate in time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering 
experiments.

The position is open to scientists who ideally hold (or in the near 
future will receive) a PhD in a physics-related discipline and are 
interested in the dynamics of glasses or molecular systems, material 
science or chemistry. Experience in  neutron scattering and/or 
numerical methods will be advantageous. Since the project involves a 
significant amount of computing, computer literacy is essential.
