The Hahn-Meitner-Institut invites applications for the position of an
instrument scientist in the area of neutron scattering. The candidate
will be the responsible scientist for the innovative time-of-flight
instrument station EXED, which is dedicated to neutron scattering
research at very high magnetic fields.

The Hahn-Meitner-Institut (HMI) is a German National Laboratory and a
member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research
Centres and has about 800 em-ployees. It hosts the Berlin Neutron
Scattering Centre (BENSC) (www.hmi.de/bensc/), a user facility open
to scientists from all over the world. To probe the structure and
dynamics of condensed matter, BENSC provides the national and
international research community with state-of-the-art neutron
scattering research opportunities. The successful candidate will be
responsible for the commissioning, operation, continuous enhancement
and modernisation of the beyond state-of-the-art extreme sample
environment diffractometer EXED at the re-search reactor BER-II at
HMI. The instrument will start user operation as an innovative, vari-
able and ultrahigh resolution time-of-flight diffractometer in 2007.
Subsequently, it will be developed in collaboration with the high
field magnet team of HMI into a dedicated station to open up new
opportunities for neutron scattering research at unprecedented high
magnetic fields, including new options to be built up for inelastic
scattering, small angle scattering and reflectometry.

The position is open to confirmed scientists who hold a PhD in

experimental Physics, Chemistry or Material Science.

A broad knowledge in condensed matter physics, neutron scattering
and/or X-ray methods will be required, as well as experience in
neutron scattering instrument development and operation, and
technical project management.

Depending on the qualification, the position might be offered as a
probationary manager for a period of two years and the option of a
tenure position. Payment is based on the Tarifver-trag für den
öffentlichen Dienst (TVöD).

For further details about the post please contact Prof. Dr. F. Mezei
(+49(30)8062-2031). Ap-plicants should send a letter of application,
CV and a list of publications to Hahn-Meitner-Institut, Abteilung
Personal und Soziales, Glienicker Str. 100, D-14109 Berlin, before 25
September 2006, quoting reference no. SF 2006/23.
