RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

Western Kentucky University, Applied Physics Institute is seeking 
applicants for a Research Associate position in the application of 
nuclear methods for elemental analysis of materials. 
The successful applicant will join an active group developing non-
destructive methods for bulk analysis and characterization.  
This is a one year renewable position, depending upon performance and 
grant fund availability.   
Research areas and projects are described on the institute website: 
http://www.wku.edu/API/.  Facilities include sealed tube 14 MeV and 
2.5 MeV neutron generators, 1-MeV RFQ and 2.5-MeV Van de Graaff 
accelerators, isotopic neutron sources (252-Cf, Pu-Be), and a large 
variety of data acquisition electronic units, neutron detectors, and 
HPGe, NaI(TI) and BGO gamma-ray detectors.

Qualifications:
> Master’s Degree in Physics, Nuclear Physics, or Nuclear Engineering, 
and a strong background in radiation measurements, nuclear 
electronics, data acquisition systems, and Monte Carlo methods is 
required.  Ph.D. degree is preferred.
> Experience in design and construction of nuclear instrumentation and 
electronics is desired.
> Experience in nuclear-based bulk detection of CRNE threats is 
desired.
> Expertise in the following computer languages C++, VC++, VBASIC, 
Labview, and operating systems Windows 9x/XP/CE, and Unix/Linux 9 is 
desired.
> Expertise in application of Monte Carlo methods and codes for 
transport of neutrons/photons is desired.
> Must be able to work with hazardous and radioactive materials.
> Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
> Must be able to work both independently and with undergraduate 
students who require occasional supervision.
> Must be eligible to work in the United States.

Expected Salary:  $42,000 Annually.
