A PhD position is available at the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering
of the ETH Zurich and Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland to
explore the interplay between non-magnetic and magnetic colloids and
the phase behavior of such mixtures.
Suspensions of colloidal particles are of great interest in Soft
Condensed Matter Physics due to their applications in many industries
such as food processing but also due to their potential for the
fabrication of tailored structures on the nano- and micrometer scale
and due to their use as model systems. Their phase behavior and many
of their properties can be controlled by tailoring the interactions
between the colloidal particles or by the application of external
fields. Suspensions of ferro- or paramagnetic colloidal particles -
ferrofluids - show interesting rheological and structural properties
that can be tuned with an external magnetic field. In mixtures of non-
magnetic and magnetic colloids, structural ordering among the non-
magnetic particles is generally facilitated by the magnetic colloids
in a magnetic field. As ferrofluids are opaque, neutron- and X-ray
scattering experiments are planned. Both techniques are available at
You have a diploma or master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, or
Materials Science as well as good knowledge in statistical Physics
and some previous knowledge in Soft Condensed Matter Physics.
Furthermore, you enjoy both experimental and theoretical work.
