2007 LANSCE Neutron School on Hydrogen in Materials

The Manuel Lujan, Jr. Neutron Scattering Center is organizing a neutron
summer school on Hydrogen in Materials. The school will be held at the
Lujan Center (Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM 87545) July
12-20, 2007.

The school is intended for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in
physics, chemistry, and materials science interested in the application of
neutron scattering techniques (elastic and inelastic) to investigate the
structure and dynamics of materials containing hydrogen. Senior
undergraduate students and junior faculty members are also invited to
apply. More details can be found at http://www.lanl.gov/ns2007 or by
sending an e-mail to wnschool at lanl.gov or to one of the organizers listed

The lectures will cover an introduction to a variety of neutron scattering
techniques (diffraction, small-angle scattering, inelastic scattering, and
reflectometry), and will highlight recent development in hydrogen research
as supported by neutron scattering. Hyrides, porous materials, clathrates,
proton conductors and fuel cell materials, and other materials will be
discussed. The formal lectures will be supplemented by hands-on experiments
on five instruments at the Lujan Center to illustrate with important
classes of hydrogen-containing materials the neutron scattering techniques
presented during the school.

The 2007 LANSCE Neutron School is sponsored in part by the National Science
Foundation and by the U.S. Department of Energy, Basic Energy Science.
Financial support is available for participants. Attendance will be limited
to 30 participants.
