Neutron Scattering Science Division
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge, Tennessee

ORNL07-46-NSSD

Project Description:

Major duties and responsibilities include:

* Evaluate the short and long term needs for dynamic nuclear
polarization at the SNS in terms of neutron scattering, diffraction, and
neutron polarization.

* Evaluate different techniques for achieving high nuclear polarization
in adiabatic samples suitable for neutron scattering.

* Establishe a polarized target program for neutron scattering.

* Conduct independent scientific research related to dynamics nuclear
polarization and/or neutron scattering.

* Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality
program requirements.

* Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of
laboratory values and ethics.

Qualifications:

Demonstrate expertise in the area of Dynamics Nuclear Polarization.
Candidates with a recent Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, biological
sciences, materials science, or related fields will be considered.
Knowledge of all areas of dynamics nuclear polarization is required.
Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a
team environment are required. Experience in scattering techniques is
desired. The successful candidate is expected help lead the effort of
establishing a polarized target program for neutron scattering at the
SNS. The candidate is expected to conduct independent research related
to dynamic nuclear polarization and/or neutron scattering, particularly
in areas of achieving high proton/deuteron polarization in samples such
as protein crystals, clatherates etc.

How to Apply:

more of the front end, rf, power supply, vacuum and/or target systems.
This includes development of automated procedures and protection
systems.

Participate in the development of Java-based high-level applications for
the EPICS/XAL - based SNS control system. Integrate control system
applications with a modern software framework such as Eclipse. Develop
hardware and software strategies for management and mining of archived
control system data.
