SNS Vacuum Engineer

Summary:
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
invites applications for a Vacuum Engineer. SNS is the most powerful
short-pulse spallation neutron source in the world. This unique facility
provides opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year from
universities, national labs, and industry for basic and applied research
and technology development. The diverse fields of study include
materials science, magnetic materials, polymers and complex fluids,
chemistry, and biology. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office
of Science, SNS began operations in June 2006.

 Responsibilities & Qualifications:
Successful candidate will provide, under the general supervision of the
Vacuum Systems Team Leader, the design, analysis, manufacture,
installation, testing and commissioning of vacuum systems for the SNS
accelerator, target and instruments; provide the engineering and
technical administrative expertise during the manufacture and operations
of these systems and direct and or participate in current and future
vacuum system R&D activities.

Major duties and responsibilities are listed below:
* The preparation and development of vacuum system requirements
specifications and other related documentation.
* The design and integration of the SNS vacuum systems operating in the
rough through to the ultra high vacuum (UHV) regimes.
* The preparation, review and approval of technical documentation in
support of the procurement of vacuum parts and equipments.
* The preparation and development of integrated installation, test, and
commissioning plans for both vacuum and other related systems.
* The review of designs and other documentation of vacuum and other
related systems.
* The oversight of manufacturers during the fabrication of vacuum
components and equipment; reviewing and approving manufacturing plans
and other vendor documentation, monitoring quality and witnessing of
acceptance tests at the vendors premises.
* The technical support and oversight during the assembly, installation,
testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of accelerator,
target and instrument vacuum and other related systems.
* Identification and implementation of R&D activities needed to support
vacuum system operations and upgrades.
* The development of budgets, schedules and plans in support of vacuum
system operations and developments and implementing of these plans
within budgetary and schedule constraints.
* The oversight of vacuum technicians and technical associates in all
matters related to vacuum system engineering and operations.
* Compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program
requirements, including ISMS.
* Maintenance of a strong commitment to the implementation and
perpetuation of values and ethics.

The successful candidates must have: A BS degree in engineering or a
related technical field with a least 5 years experience in the design,
construction and operation of vacuum and cryogenic systems and hardware
and related control and data acquisition systems or an equivalent
combination of both education and experience. Prior experience in the
managing of technicians and subcontractors responsible for fabricating,
installing commissioning and operating vacuum systems is desired. The
candidate must have excellent written and verbal communications skills,
be computer literate and proficient using program such as Word, Excel
and MathCad etc., and able to perform vacuum systems analysis and have a
working knowledge in heat transfer and stress analysis.
