Summary:	
The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
invites applications for a Neutron Scattering Science Division Director.
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), when combined with the High Flux
Isotope Reactor (HFIR) makes Oak Ridge the world's foremost center for
Neutron Science. The mission of the division is to carry out and enable
excellent and vibrant science programs using neutron scattering
instruments, supporting a world-class user science program, developing
and participating in signature science programs across ORNL, and
conducting cutting-edge in-house research. The Neutron Scattering
Science Division is responsible for operating and developing the neutron
scattering instruments located at both SNS and HFIR. Research at the
facilities will encompass the physical, chemical, materials, biological,
and medical sciences. These unique facilities provide opportunities for
up to 2000 researchers each year from universities, national labs, and
industry for basic and applied research and technology development. 

	
Responsibilities & Qualifications:	
Successful candidate will provide strategic leadership for and overall
management of the experimental facilities including the R&D and
operations of the instrument and target systems. Establishes,
coordinates, and enhances close ties to the neutron science user
community. 

Major duties and responsibilities: 

* Guides the development and operation of the Neutron Scattering Science
Programs at both the SNS and HFIR. 
* Participates in the development of project goals and strategies. Is a
member of the NScD executive management team. Leads development of the
neutron scattering scientific programs. 
* Develops opportunities for broadening funding base for NScD scientific
programs and instrumentation. 
* Ensures compliance with and leadership for environment, safety,
health, and quality program requirements including ISMS. 
* Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation
of values and ethics. 
* Plans for, selects, and develops a team of scientists, engineers,
technicians, and administrative staff for instruments, operations, and
user programs. 
* Develops user program, identifies the user community, and coordinates
user communications/interactions. 
* Leads development of an integrated science program to include users,
educational partnerships, joint institutes, and collaborations with
other research institutions. 
* Convenes the Neutron Scattering Science Advisory Committee. 
* Represents NSSD with review committees, user community, advisory
committees, and visitors and at conferences, workshops, invited
talks/lectures, and technical meetings. May serve as member of external
review teams, editorial boards, advisory committees, and/or conference
organizing committees. 
* Maintenance of a strong commitment to the implementation and
perpetuation of values and ethics. 

The successful candidate must have a PhD in physics, materials science,
or related discipline with at least 5 years of experience in neutron
science or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
required. Recognized leadership in neutron scattering science with
record of participation and membership on editorial boards, national and
international committees, peer review boards, and/or advisory committees
required. Strong communication skills including an extensive list of
publications and presentations required. Demonstrated achievements in
promoting collaborative relationships and building research teams
required.
