MEMBERS OF THE ESS-BILBAO GOVERNING BOARD VISIT THE AMERICAN NEUTRON SOURCE
(SNS)

·         To continue making progress in their joint technology
collaboration project

A delegation of representatives from the Governing Board of the ESS-Bilbao
Consortium, headed by the Secretary of State for Research, has visited the
American Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) sited at the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory, Tennessee. During their visit, representatives of the Spanish
candidature laid the foundations to set up an agreement comprising
collaboration on technology matters between both institutions.

The opportunity to work together with the team responsible for the operation
of the most powerful spallation neutron source is a very positive step for
the Bilbao candidature. In declarations made during her visit to the SNS,
Cristina Oyón, ESS-Bilbao Interim Project Manager stated, “the collaboration
agreement we are going to sign with the Americans on development of ion
sources, accelerator and target technologies strengthens our own project as
our bid has the backing of the leading experts in the world in the field of
Spallation Neutron Sources.”

The Spanish team presented their American counterparts with the R&D
programme designed by ESS-B to create an international Knowledge Pole around
the European Spallation Source.

During the visit to the USA, the Spanish candidature team gained first-hand
knowledge of the different Centres that form part of the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL), the site of the American Neutron Source (SNS). Spanish
representatives held meetings with their American counterparts in a number
of different departments of the ORNL and had the opportunity of seeing the
SNS in operation and learning about how it was built.

The European Spallation Source is an ambitious project involving investments
in technological infrastructures amounting to approximately 1300 million
euros. The ESS-Bilbao project expects to generate 600 permanent jobs plus
the 4000 people who may use the infrastructure on an annual basis. The ESS
is one of 35 major European technology infrastructures included in the VII
R&D Framework Programme of the European Union.

Some of the major scientific applications of the Spallation Source include
molecular biology, material physics, medicine, automotive, aeronautics and
electronics. The function of the Spallation Sources is to produce neutrons
that penetrate matter providing precise information on its atomic structure.
