[Neutron] NEUTRON SCATTERING POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW (SERGIS)

ORNL is seeking a post-doctoral researcher with broad expertise and
interests in the area of soft-condensed matter. Candidates with a recent
Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or related
fields will be considered. Candidates with knowledge and experience in
neutron scattering are encouraged to apply. Experience on SANS/SAXS or
neutron/x-ray reflectometry is a plus. Strong written and oral
communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment are
required. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more
than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all
degree requirements before starting their appointment.

 

Purpose:

Works closely with the scientists at the SNS on developing the SERGIS
(Spin-Echo Resolved Grazing-Incidence Scattering) technique.  SERGIS
uses the well-known neutron spin echo effect for encoding the momentum
transfer in reflectometry by the application of tilted magnetic-field
interfaces.   The research team will be conducting active research
related to soft-condensed matter materials using the state-of-the-art
neutron scattering instruments available in national labs. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: (Include an ES&H statement and an ethics
and values statement.)

 

*         Conduct neutron scattering experiments on soft-condensed
materials such as biological colloidal systems and membranes.

*         Develop the theoretical data analysis protocol needed for the
interpretation of the experimental results. 

*         Travel to other neutron facilities to do neutron scattering
experiments.

*         Publish research results in scientific journals.

*         Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and
perpetuation of values and ethics.

*         Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health and
quality program requirements.

 

Work Direction and Interfaces:

 

Reports to the lead instrument scientist of CNCS.  Works with other
members in the Neutron Scattering Science Division and collaborates with
scientists in Oak Ridge National Laboratory and other neutron scattering
institutions.
