Instrument and Mail-in Service Operator for the High Resolution Powder
Neutron Diffractometer
NIST Center for Neutron Research
National Institute of Standards and Technology

The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking an instrument and
mail-in service operator for the high resolution neutron powder
diffractometer. NCNR is a national user facility that develops and makes
available to the general scientific community advanced neutron
instrumentation. The high-resolution neutron powder diffractometer enables
the determination of atomic and magnetic structures of solid-state materials
though Rietveld or other methods of analysis. It is a versatile instrument
that is readily modified to the specific needs of the user and allows
experiments to be performed at different resolutions, over a broad
temperature range (0.02 to 2000 K) and under both pressure or magnetic
fields. One quarter of the beam time is allocated to the "mail-in" service,
where scientists with successful proposals directly send samples for
measurement, and the resulting data is returned for analysis.

The position is full time and requires a bachelor's degree from an
accredited college or university in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical
Engineering, or Physics. Successful candidates must demonstrate excellent
oral and written communication, interpersonal, and mechanical skills, as
well as proficiency with general computing environments. They must be able
to work effectively in a team as well as efficiently perform assigned
independent tasks.

Responsibilities include supporting staff and researchers in the use of the
diffraction instrument; running the mail-in service; assisting visiting
users in preparing for experiments, sample handling and setup of sample
environment equipment; assisting in maintaining, calibrating, and improving
instrument capabilities; providing instruction and support in the use of
appropriate computer software. Expressions of interest along with a resume
should be sent (preferably electronically) to:
