Senior Scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Neutron
Scattering Center: Low and high temperature and magnetic field

The Lujan Neutron Scattering Center is seeking a scientist or
engineer to lead the sample environments area for the DOE national
user program that hosts researchers from around the world to do work
on its 11 neutron scattering instruments. This position involves
developing new low and high temperature (e.g., 0.1K-2500K) and
magnetic field (e.g., 15T) sample environment capabilities as well as
maintaining existing equipment that includes closed cycle He
refrigerators, He dilution systems, He cryostats, superconducting
magnets, and resistive and optical furnaces. The successful
candidate must have demonstrated previous experience in these areas
and show a desire to stay abreast of new developments that can expand
the Center's capabilities. Experience at a user facility is an asset.

The successful applicant will have extensive experience with the
operation and maintenance of cryogenic equipment including He3-He4
dilution systems, superconducting magnets, temperature controllers,
cryogenic sensors, as well as high temperature furnaces. Experience
using this equipment in neutron scattering research is desirable.
The position requires an individual able to work with external users
as well as the Lujan scientific and technical staff. The ability to
develop computer control interfaces (preferably EPICS) is necessary.
The successful candidate should have a MS or Ph.D. degree in
experimental physics, materials science, or appropriate engineering
subject. Equivalent technical experience will qualify. Opportunities
to pursue individual research are available.

To be considered applicants must submit a complete resume, a detailed
cover letter addressing the key job requirements of this position,
and three letters of reference. For additional technical
information, contact Jim Rhyne, Lujan Center Deputy Director, at
505-665-0071 or rhyne at lanl.gov. Applications must be submitted
through the Los Alamos National Laboratory website www.hr.lanl.gov/
FindJob/ (Job # 218477).

Senior Software Engineer at at Los Alamos National Laboratory’s
Neutron Scattering Center: Data acquisition, experiment control, and
data analysis

Experienced software engineer to support the research programs at the
Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at LANSCE. The Lujan Center is a DOE
National User Facility that hosts researchers from around the world
on its twelve neutron scattering beam lines. The successful
candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining data
acquisition, experimental control, scientific analysis, and user
interface software, including establishing requirements, planning
development, design, implementation, and testing. They will be
required to work closely with the scientific and technical staff at
the Center and will be involved in researching, exploring, testing,
and integrating appropriate new software technologies as needed.

Expertise in distributed multi-channel data acquisition systems; real-
time software applications including those that interface to custom
hardware; GUI development; modern software engineering practices and
technologies; modern object oriented software languages, particularly
C++; relational databases; and the planning and tracking of software
development projects. Experience in: working with Linux, Java, Perl,
Python, EPICS-based control software, and VME/VXI-based custom
hardware; developing data acquisition systems for neutron or
synchrotron facilities; developing scientific software for analysis
and visualization of neutron or x-ray scattering data; developing web-
based applications; and working in a scientific research environment.

Required minimum MS in computer engineering/science, or equivalent
combination of experience and relevant technical/scientific degree.
To be considered applicants must submit a complete resume and a
comprehensive cover letter that addresses the key requirements of
this position. For additional technical information, contact Paul
Lewis, Lujan Center Deputy Director, at 505-665-0932 or

Senior Scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Neutron
Scattering Center: Inelastic scattering in condensed matter systems

The Lujan Neutron Scattering Center is seeking applicants for an
instrument scientist to lead the development of a new high resolution
single crystal inelastic spectrometer and to initiate a strong
scientific research and user program using this instrument and other
inelastic capabilities. The Lujan Center is a DOE national user
facility that hosts researchers from around the world to do work on
its 11 neutron scattering instruments. This position involves
working with an instrument advisory team and local engineering
expertise in final design and construction of the instrument that
will become the major inelastic capability for the Lujan Center. In
addition to single crystal capability, it will feature low-
temperature, high magnetic field, and moderate pressure sample
environments.

The successful applicant will have extensive experience and a strong
publication record of research involving inelastic scattering in
condensed matter systems. Previous experience in design of inelastic
instruments at a pulse neutron source is highly desired. Candidates
with extensive experience in synchrotron x-ray scattering will also
be considered. In addition to pursing a high-visibility research
program, the candidate will be expected to build a strong base of
external users for the instrument. A Ph.D. degree in experimental
condensed matter or materials science is required with a minimum of
five years experience in neutron scattering or related research.
During the instrument development phase, the candidate is encouraged
to pursue an active research program.
