Project Description:
The Neutron Scattering Sciences Division (NSSD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) (http://www.ornl.gov) operates two of the brightest neutron sources in the world, the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), for basic and applied research in a broad array of disciplines including physics, chemistry, materials science and biology. SNS and HFIR are home to a group of scientists and a suite of instruments dedicated to the study of materials science and engineering.

Responsibilities:
The Data Acquisition Instrument Associate will provide technical support for the fabrication and testing of Data Acquisition computer and networking systems for the HFIR and SNS neutron scattering sources. The instrument associate will also provide technical support for the fabrication and testing of Data Acquisition computer and networking systems for the HFIR and SNS neutron scattering sources. Other major duties include:

 *   As a member of the data acquisition and detector teams, assists with the testing and integration of data acquisition components for neutron scattering instruments.
 *   Provides technical support for R&D activities including experimental support at off-site facilities.
 *   Participates in the setup and operation of computer-controlled experiments at the neutron scattering facilities SNS and HFIR.
 *   Develop ancillary equipment control programs using programs such as LabView.
 *   Set up and trouble shoot networking systems.
 *   Set up and trouble shoot Window based computers.
 *   Participates with other team members in developing goals, resource plans, and policies for the team.
 *   Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS.
 *   Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Qualifications:
Successful candidates will have a bachelor's degree in electronics technology or a related technical field with at least five years experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with electronics assembly and testing, soldering of electronic components, mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of electronic circuitry required. Experience is required with standard test equipment such as oscilloscopes, voltmeters, and pulse generators. Familiar with the use of office automation tools such as spreadsheets and databases. Familiar with the use of industry standard DAS software such as LabView or C++. Limited travel required. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
