[Neutron] Passing of Lachlan Cranswick

Requests for information regarding the whereabouts of Lachlan Cranswick have been issued previously on neutronsources.org. We regret to inform the community that he is now confirmed dead. The National Research Council Canada has issued the following statement concerning his death:


OFFICIAL STATEMENT: missing employee Lachlan Cranswick

June 21, 2010 - Chalk River, Ontario

The National Research Council (NRC) has learned that the body of a man recovered from the Ottawa River near Deep River is that of NRC scientist, Lachlan Cranswick. Lachlan Cranswick had been reported missing from his home in Deep River since 2010 January 18. 

Lachlan Cranswick was a research scientist at the NRC Canadian Neutron Beam Centre located at Chalk River Laboratories, where he specialized in applying neutron beams to the studies of materials science, structural chemistry, magnetism and geology.  He assisted many scientists and students from universities across Canada to apply these scientific tools to advance their research programs.  Lachlan Cranswick was passionate about ensuring the highest quality facilities for those scientists.  

Outside of his formal duties, Lachlan Cranswick worked tirelessly to support the international scientific community for access to software tools, with a particular focus on helping scientists in disadvantaged countries.  Lachlan Cranswick was also very active in the local community of Deep River, particularly with the Deep River Curling Club and the Deep River Yacht and Tennis Club.  He had many other varied interests as well, including photographing nature. Lachlan Cranswick's professional and social contributions will be dearly missed by his colleagues and friends. 

On behalf of the Government of Canada, the NRC sends its sincerest thoughts and condolences to the family and colleagues of Lachlan Cranswick.
