HELMHOLTZ CENTER BERLIN FOR MATERIALS AND ENERGY
Division Magnetic Materials
Institute of Complex Magnetic Materials

Scientist Ph.D.
(Physicist or cognate disciplines)

The Institute of Complex Magnetic Materials invites applications for a postdoctoral position for the 3He neutron spin
filter project.

The Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy (hxxp://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/) is a German National Laboratory
and a member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres. It hosts the Berlin neutron source
BER II and the Berlin synchrotron storage ring BESSY II, which are outstanding user facilities open to scientists from
all over the world.

The successful candidate will commission the filling station for 3He neutron spin filters and subsequently transfer it
to routine operation. This includes test experiments at the neutron beam and further instrumental developments
concerning methods to determine and control the 3He polarisation. He / she will collaborate with instrument scientists
and users to adapt the 3He neutron spin filters to the experimental conditions and to support them during the
application of these filters in the frame of neutron scattering experiments

Candidates are expected to have a PhD or equivalent advanced degree in physics or cognate disciplines. He /she should
have good knowledge in atomic physics and in optics as well as experience in laser applications, vacuum techniques and -
in particular - in instrumental developments. Experience in neutron scattering and resonance methods would also be
greatly appreciated.
The appointment is for 2 years. The work place will be situated at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Germany. For more
information regarding the position, please contact Dr. A. Rupp, tel.: +49-30-8062431 77, email: rupp-a at helmholtz-berlin.de

Applicants should send a letter of application, a detailed CV, copies of diploma and PhD certificates, a list of
publications and the contact details of two academic referees to the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und
Energie GmbH, Abt. Personal und Soziales, Hahn-Meitner-Platz 1, D-14109 Berlin, Germany, (Email:
personalabteilung at helmholtz-berlin.de<mailto:personalabteilung at helmholtz-berlin.de>) quoting reference no. M2011/11.

The deadline for the application is 31 October 2011.
