ISIS is the world's most productive pulsed neutron and muon research centre, providing state of the art facilities to enable and underpin a wide range of research into the atomic and molecular behaviour of materials. We support a national and international community of more than 2000 academic and industrial investigators studying a diverse scientific portfolio ranging from curiosity-driven science through to application-led research. As an interdisciplinary research centre (co-located with the Diamond Light Source and the Research Complex at Harwell) ISIS represents an excellent opportunity to develop both collaborative and personal scientific research programmes and to help shape the future of neutron science.
We are currently looking for a highly motivated and independent scientist to fill a full-time, permanent position within the ISIS Crystallography Group. Specifically, we wish to recruit an Instrument Scientist to support to the user programme on the PEARL diffractometer, which is dedicated to the study of the effects of high pressure on crystalline and amorphous materials, using the unique properties of the neutron to provide detailed information on changes to the atomic structure during compression. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to ongoing equipment development projects (including the design of new high pressure cells and the provision of improved data analysis software) and perform their own research programme in the field of high pressure science.
Minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a materials science, or related, discipline. Applicants are expected to possess a solid scientific background in their relevant discipline, and a strong knowledge of crystallography and high pressure techniques using neutron or x-ray analysis is essential. Experience in the use of central facilities and a proven ability to develop instrumentation and/or data analysis software would be an advantage. Candidates should possess excellent written and oral skills in English and must be able to work effectively both on their own and as part of a small team.
