Development Engineer

The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Development Engineer

Description of directorate/division
The neutron chopper group is part of the Instrument Support Division and dedicated to providing and supporting key components required for the construction and operation of the facilities scientific instruments. The group will be compose 8-10, engineers and technicians jointly responsible for the neutron choppers systems throughout the whole life cycle from conception, through installation and maintenance in the field.

Description of main responsibilities
The development engineer will be responsible for the day to day running of chopper group development lab and for the management of a team of technicians executing development projects and the testing activities the group. During early phase of the project the development engineer will be heavily involved in setting up the chopper development laboratory itself and participating in the recruitment of development staff.

He/she will have responsibility for;

•Leading research and development initiatives, in the field of neutron choppers, for the scientific instruments of the ESS.

•Participation in the elaboration of strategies, techniques and methods to ensure system performance, reliability and cost.

•Participation in the definition of requirements for the design and/or supply of equipment;

•Management of the integration and testing of components and systems prior to testing;

• Supervision of development technicians and outside contractors.

•Ensuring the safe operation, performance and maintainability of systems under development.

Qualifications
The nature of the position with development and support roles requires someone polyvalent with both technical competence, and operational capacities and hand on experience.

Essential qualifications:

• An Degree in Mechatronic or Mechanical Engineering

• In addition 5-10 years of experience in a engineering development environment

•The design of mechanical and electromechanical systems

•Programming machine control systems & software

•Participation in development of complex electro-mechanical systems

•Manufacturing in the context of prototype development

•Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Desirable qualifications:

• Experience in leading (small) teams of engineers and technicians, preferably in an international or research environment

• The organization and day to day running of small laboratories or workshops
