Proposals at the OPAL Neutron Beam Facility (thermal-neutron instruments only) and National Deuteration Facility

Deadline 15 September 2013, for beam time between January and June 2014

ANSTO is open for proposals for the following neutron-beam instruments and facilities:

Echidna<http://www.ansto.gov.au/research/bragg_institute/facilities/instruments/echidna> (high-resolution powder diffractometer)
Wombat<http://www.ansto.gov.au/research/bragg_institute/facilities/instruments/wombat> (high-intensity powder diffractometer)
Koala<http://www.ansto.gov.au/research/bragg_institute/facilities/instruments/koala> (Laue diffractometer)
Kowari<http://www.ansto.gov.au/research/bragg_institute/facilities/instruments/kowari> (strain scanner)

Taipan<http://www.ansto.gov.au/research/bragg_institute/facilities/instruments/taipan> (thermal 3-axis spectrometer)
Biological<http://www.ansto.gov.au/research/bragg_institute/facilities/molecular_deuteration/biological_deuteration_laboratories> and Chemical<http://www.ansto.gov.au/research/bragg_institute/facilities/molecular_deuteration/chemical_deuteration_laboratories> Deuteration (at the National Deuteration Facility<http://www.ansto.gov.au/research/facilities_and_equipment/national_deuteration_facility> - NDF), in conjunction with neutron experiments at OPAL

Proposals should be submitted using our on-line system, https://neutron.ansto.gov.au<https://neutron.ansto.gov.au/> Deadline: 15 September 2013.

  * For single visit proposals for neutron instruments, select round "2014-1 Neutron"
  * For 3 year program proposals for neutron instruments, select "2014-1 Neutron Program"
  * For National Deuteration Facility proposals, select round "2014-1 Deuteration"

For other National Deuteration Facility<http://www.ansto.gov.au/research/bragg_institute/facilities/molecular_deuteration> research proposals, for instance for NMR, optical spectroscopy or neutron experiments at facilities other than OPAL, Australian and New Zealand users should submit via AINSE's portal<http://grants.ainse.edu.au/>.
Regarding our QUOKKA<http://www.ansto.gov.au/ResearchHub/Bragg/Facilities/Instruments/Quokka/index.htm>, PLATYPUS<http://www.ansto.gov.au/ResearchHub/Bragg/Facilities/Instruments/Platypus/index.htm>, PELICAN<http://www.ansto.gov.au/ResearchHub/Bragg/Facilities/Instruments/Pelican/index.htm> and SIKA<http://www.ansto.gov.au/ResearchHub/Bragg/Facilities/Instruments/Sika/index.htm> cold-neutron instruments, which are expected to resume operations soon, following the advice of our external advisory committee<http://www.ansto.gov.au/ResearchHub/Bragg/About/Committees/AdvisoryCommittee/index.htm>, these instruments will not be made available through the normal peer-reviewed proposal round that closes on 15th September. They will operate in "friendly-user" mode for quite some time, and we will try to meet commitments to previously-approved proposals including the two approved programs of research, will give some priority to experiments using specially deuterated materials produced by the National Deuteration Facility<http://www.ansto.gov.au/ResearchHub/Bragg/Facilities/NationalDeuterationFacility/index.htm>, to students and early-career researchers who are dependent on data from OPAL for their career development, and to researchers with a track record of productive use of the relevant instruments. Again, following the advice of our Advisory Committee<http://www.ansto.gov.au/ResearchHub/Bragg/About/Committees/AdvisoryCommittee/index.htm>, the prioritisation and review will be done internally within the Institute and will be light.
