Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>

Purpose:
The Structure and Dynamics of Soft Matter group (SDSM), in the Biology and Soft Matter Division (BSMD) of the Neutron Sciences Directorate, Oak Ridge national laboratory (ORNL), is seeking candidates for postdoctoral research associates in the area of soft materials. The SDSM group is responsible for the scientific and user programs on several of the neutron scattering instruments at ORNL's Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), two of the highest flux neutron sources in the world. Combined with other leading capabilities in chemical synthesis and advanced computing, ORNL delivers a unique set of tools for the study of soft condensed matter. The initial appointment is a temporary full-time assignment not to exceed 24 months.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Develops vigorous research programs using modeling, experiment, and theory to understand soft materials primarily through neutron and x-ray scattering techniques.
- Research interests should range from studying microscopic to mesoscopic length scales and the corresponding temporal ranges.
- It is expected that close collaborative relationships with other members of BSMD and the staff of the SNS and HFIR will be established.
- Expected to publish research results in scientific journals, maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics and ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
- Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
- Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand and eye protection gear, kneeling, sitting for extended periods of time, extensive work at chemical laboratories, and possible exposure to ionization radiation normally associated with
operation of neutron scattering instruments for scientific research.

Qualifications Required
Candidates with recent Ph.D.'s in Physics, Applied Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related science will be considered. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. Must have a strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications, preferably as a lead author, in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.

Other Requirements:
Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position. A minimum of 2 letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to sic at ornl.gov. <mailto:sic at ornl.gov> Please include the title of the position in the subject line.

*Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

*Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.

Qualifications Desired:
- Expertise in mathematical analysis and modeling is desirable but not required.
- Applicants should have a strong interest in understanding the fundamental interaction mechanisms in soft materials.

Technical Questions: Questions regarding the position can be directed to Dr. Gregory S. Smith (smithgs1 at ornl.gov).
