Materials Scientist Position in Neutron & X-ray Scattering at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
http://www.ornl.gov/ornl/careers

The Scattering and Thermophysics Group in the Materials Science & Technology Division at ORNL invites applications for a materials scientist position in basic research using state-of-the-art neutron and x-ray scattering. The scientific focus of this group is to use measurements of the lattice dynamics and microstructure in advanced functional materials to understand the mechanisms underpinning useful energy conversion processes, such as electro-mechanical, thermoelectric, or electro-optical. Examples of current research areas include: investigating dynamic polar nanoregions in relaxor ferroelectrics; minimizing phonon thermal transport for enhanced thermoelectric efficiency; and understanding the role of anharmonic lattice vibrations in metal-insulator phase transitions. Scattering studies are carried out in conjunction with collaborative, first-principles theory and modeling. The incumbent will benefit from interactions with the diverse experimental and theoretical materials research programs at ORNL and from forefront ORNL research capabilities, including the Spallation Neutron Source, the High Flux Isotope Reactor, the National Center for Computational Science, and the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences. In addition, the neutron and x-ray scattering group has ongoing programs using advanced techniques at synchrotron x-ray facilities such as the Advanced Photon Source and the Linac Coherent Light Source. Candidates at different career stages will be considered, but applicants will be expected to describe research plans for innovative, independent research related to the general scientific focus of the group. The position will perform research supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Sciences and Engineering Division.
