Dear Colleagues,

As it was already announced, the 3rd JCNS Workshop on neutron instrumentation

“From spallation to continuous neutron sources: a positive feedback on neutron instrumentation”

will be held in Munich-Tutzing on October 20-23, 2014. Registration and abstract submission is opened via the workshop website http://www.fz-juelich.de/jcns/JCNS-Workshop2014.

The deadline for abstract submission and registration is 24 August, 2014, for payment - 15 September, 2014.

During recent years a number of new instruments have been designed for ISIS, J-PARC and SNS – some of these ideas and experience can be very useful for the instrumentation at continuous sources. The ESS at the horizon should be another trigger to intensify today’s instrumentation upgrade. Many years of enormous intellectual efforts of the world neutron community, both users and instrument scientists aiming the definition of new instrumental challenges and developments of the instrumental concepts resulted in new ideas and approaches, which cover thewhole neutron tract (target, cold sources, neutron delivery systems, instrument components and instruments themselves). This stockpile of knowledge can be fruitfully used for the improvement of the existing instrumentation.

The workshop will be devoted to this issue and bring together neutron scientists working both at spallation and continuous neutron sources to consider the latest instrumental developments for spallation sources through the prism of their use for instrumentation at continuous sources. Challenges met during the construction of the last generation of neutron instruments at continuous sources will be discussed as well.

The scope of the workshop will include but not limited to

· New instrumental concepts

· Design of cold sources in conjunction with neutron transport systems

· Advanced neutron transport systems (e.g. focusing and ballistic optics)

· Multi-analyzer systems

· Instrument components (chopper, detectors, Polarization analysis, etc.)

· Shielding

· New sample environment (high magnetic fields, etc.)

Invited speakers include:
Annie Brulet (LLB), Robert Dalgliesh (ISIS, tbc), Uwe Filges (PSI), Bernhard Frick (ILL), Arsen Goukassov (LLB), Shane Kennedy (ANSTO), Jiri Kulda (ILL), Ferenc Mezei (ESS), Henrik Rønnow (EPFL, tbc), Jochen Stahn (PSI),
