February 18-27, 2015

Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, Los Alamos National Laboratory Los Alamos, New Mexico

Call for applications is open!

The 11th LANSCE School on Neutron Scattering: Materials at the Mesoscale, will focus on the influence of surfaces, interfaces, meso- and micro-structure on the functionality of materials. The nine day school will provide an overview and training, through hands-on exercises, of concepts, instrumentation, measuring techniques and data analysis in neutron scattering. Techniques such as: neutron diffraction, small angle neutron scattering, local structure determination, neutron reflectometry together with scanning electron microscopy will be covered.
Educational Goals
Students will become familiar with neutron scattering techniques and how they may be utilized to address important questions in materials science. Particular emphasis of this school will address properties that are not exclusively dominated by the atomic structure, but by larger length scales and/or interfaces.

Intended Audience
The 11th School is intended primarily for graduate students & post-docs in chemistry, engineering, earth sciences, materials science, physics, and related fields. Students should have a basic understanding of scattering and diffraction phenomena.

Overview
The 11th School will cover:

· Basic concepts of neutron production, scattering methods, and instrumentation.

· Introduction to phenomena in mesoscale science with emphasis on areas of basic and applied research, where neutrons (and other scattering techniques) can and do make fundamental contributions.

· Technical aspects of measurement techniques and data analysis.

· Computational techniques that complement and aid in the planning, analysis, and interpretation of neutron measurements.

· Students will give presentations on their favorite hands-on experiment on the final day of the school.

Costs

· Registration for the school is free. All local expenses (lodging, meals, etc.) are covered for accepted participants.

· Travel to and from Los Alamos is covered up to a maximum amount of $500.
Sponsors

· Student participants are supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

· Instructors and local expenses are supported by Los Alamos National Laboratory through the Institute for Materials Research and MaRIE project.

· Logistics support is provided by: Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) and New Mexico State University.
To Apply
All application materials must be submitted to neutronschool at lanl.gov<mailto:neutronschool at lanl.gov> electronically by November 10, 2014.
Please submit:

· Application form<http://lansce.lanl.gov/neutronschool/application.shtml> with a statement by the applicant of anticipated benefits of the school on neutron scattering to their research program
