[Neutron] Postdoc position in Neutron Detection

The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Postdoc position in Neutron Detection placed at ILL in Grenoble, France.

Description of directorate/division/group

Detector group are responsible for neutron detectors on ESS instruments. As part of this we develop, commision, procure and install advanced detector systems. These systems are a mix of commercial bought in, developments with partners, and in-house developments.

Description of main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the ESS detector groups commitments at the ILL. This is in close collaboration with existing collaborative efforts between ESS and the ILL in developing novel neutron gaseous detectors based upon thin layers of B-10 as a converter material. This will be continuous current collaborative development on multigrid and multiblade designs between ILL and ESS. There is the possibility to also be involved in other detector prototypes being developed.

Qualifications

  *   PhD in physics or similar subject.
  *   Experience in modern detection technologies is a nesssity.
  *   Experience at utilising boron converters and neutron scattering would be helpful.
  *   Hands-on experience in building MWPC gaseous detectors is a necessity.
  *   Familiarity with recent R+D on the new generation of thermal neutron detectors would be helpful.
  *   The use of mathematical analytical models and using simulation tools and Monte Carlo techniques are required, as is a demonstrated ability in data analysis.
  *   Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

The position is best suited to an enthusiastic candidate who has recently gained or is about to gain a PhD in physics or similar subject.  Experience of working in an international environment is desirable.

As this position will involve working closely with collaborating institutes, a willingness to spend extended periods posted abroad and to be able to work effectively in a team is essential. Experience working at a large European research institute would be helpful. As this project has a fixed timescale, a proven ability to work to- and meet schedules is a must.

The position is a two-year temporary. Your work place will be situated in ILL Grenoble, France.
